Prototyping Leaf Clips for Photosynthesis Research

Year 2024-2025

The Challenge

Jan Ingenhousz Institute is a research center based out of Wageningen University dedicated to improving food security via photosynthesis research in food crops, a key challenge in urban environments. They consulted YUE for three different project phases to help them design and develop a prototype to attach their photosynthesis sensor to plants in the field.

YUE’s Approach

Through a research by design approach, YUE tested and iterated on the best practices to attach the sensors to a variety of crop leaves. The final result was a designed and 3D printed clip that could be mass produced and applied quickly in the field, with minimum damage to the leaf while maintaining satisfactory measurements from the sensor. An accompanying report contained test results of previous iterations and models, and suggestions for further improvements.
